Diagnostic Assessments

A full diagnostic assessment, where appropriate, can provide a diagnosis of dyslexia along with an individual profile of strengths and difficulties which can be used to ensure that the learner receives appropriate support to help them succeed in both education and everyday life.  Many learners also gain a deeper understanding of their learning styles which helps to build their self esteem.

What is dyslexia?

The British Dyslexia Association (BDA) defines 'Dyslexia' as a learning disability that primarily affects skills in accurate and fluent word reading and spelling.  It is characterised by difficulties in phonological awareness, verbal memory and verbal processing speeds (www.bdadyslexia.org.uk/)

How long does an assessment take?

Usually, an assessment can take around 3 hours (with breaks).  Where appropriate, such as with younger learners, this may be broken down into shorter sessions i.e. 2 x 1.5 hours. Please note that the minimum age for a diagnostic assessment is 8 (Year 3).

Where does the assessment take place?

An agreed location, where the learner is comfortable, will be agreed prior to assessment.  This could include their home, educational setting or the assessors address.

What happens after the assessment is completed?

A detailed report will be completed with a draft returned to the client within 15 working days of assessment.  This will include a diagnosis (if appropriate), areas of strengths as well as need, along with recommendations for support and next steps.

Will I be able to discuss the report?

Absolutely.  All clients are offered an optional 30 minute appointment via 'Zoom' following receipt of the assessment report.  This is included in the cost of the assessment.

How much does an assessment cost?

A full diagnostic assessment, including a digital (pdf) report and optional follow up appointment, is currently charged at £425.  Upon booking, a holding deposit of £50 will be required to hold the date and will be subtracted off the total amount.

What qualifications do you hold for assessment?

I have an active AMBDA (Associate Membership British Dyslexia Association) with the British Dyslexia Association which demonstrates a high standard of professional competence in both teaching and diagnostic assessment.  I also hold an active APC (Assessment Practising Certificate) so where a diagnosis is given, it can be used towards applications for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) in later years without the need for mandatory re-assessment. For further information please see the BDA website.  As a SENDCo for nearly a decade, I also have considerable experiencing of reviewing and informing target setting and educational provision (including for learners with Education, Health and Care Plans) as well as supporting families with next steps.

How do I make a booking?

Terms and Conditions can be found here.  If you'd like to discuss the possibility of an assessment further, please get in touch via email, phone or the 'message' tab which can be found via the 'contact' button on the main menu.
